One night, I dreamed of being a researcher, and today I’m…
#HumansofSTEAM
…An enthusiast of the brain and cognitive functions. Currently I’m a psychologist, professor and researcher in the Public University of Navarra. My interest focuses on acquired brain damage, this is, people that suffered an injury that makes them present some dysfunction. This kind of dysfunction can be cognitive (such as amnesia), emotional (such as PTSD), physical (such as paralysis) or social (such as isolation) My interest in research came from practical classes during my psychology degree. I had the chance to share with patients that suffered different kinds of brain damage (ictus, head trauma), and I quickly wanted to find out how could I, from my area of knowledge (neuropsychology), help these people recover. We know that age, education, culture, etc affects the evolution at short and long term, but I would like to know if the ability to speak multiple languages has any effect. Did you know that the effects of dementia slow down in bilingual people? Or that bilingual people take a bit longer in naming things compared to monolinguals? The effect of bilingualism on cognition is a fascinating and controversial subject, isn’t it?
