Mikel Imizcoz Aramburu, Universidad Pública de Navarra
- WHO are you?
My name is Mikel Imizcoz Aramburu, I was born in Pamplona in 1995, and I graduated in Chemistry from the University of Navarra in 2017. The following year, I completed a master’s degree in Sustainable Chemistry at the Universitat Politècnica de València, and currently, I am pursuing my doctorate at the Public University of Navarra in the area of chemical technology.
- WHAT do you research?
We research to obtain natural gas from CO2. We look for catalysts that allow us to capture carbon dioxide and use the energy from the Sun to transform it into fuel. Essentially, what we try to do is replicate the process that plants perform during photosynthesis, but artificially.
- WHERE do you research?
I conduct research at the Institute of Research in Advanced Materials and Mathematics (INAMAT2) of the Public University of Navarra.
- WHEN do you plan to do your work?
I started my doctorate in October 2019, and since then, I have been working on this topic. If everything goes as planned, I will submit my thesis in December 2023.
- WHY is your work important?
My work opens the door to considering the CO2 molecule as a potential energy source instead of waste. This would imply that instead of being released uncontrollably, it would be channeled and recovered to obtain fuel, reducing emissions of this greenhouse gas. At the same time, synthetic fuel constitutes a neutral emission energy source with universal access and is perfect for storing excess energy from conventional renewables.
- Is your work related to any EU mission?
Yes, my work is related to the Climate Change Adaptation Mission, including Social Transformation.
