Raquel Mayordomo Acevedo, University of Extremadura
One night, I dreamed of being a researcher, and today I’m…
I was born when man landed on the moon. In Extremadura, these were times of growth, and years later, the University where I studied and currently teach as a senior lecturer, was established.
My sister played with dolls, and I conducted experiments in the bathroom by mixing cologne with talcum powder like I was going to find out the magical formula for happiness. It seems it worked. My mother, encouraging this inclination, gave me for Christmas a book about Marie Curie, which became a model for me, and my childhood inspiration that I spent wondering.
My thesis became the definitive jump to work on science, as well as my first steps on research about embryonic development. I’m very passionate about my job, and I’m still kicking it in science, despite how difficult it currently is. Nowadays, things roll properly, but the beginnings where complicated.
Forming the lab and the research group has been a huge challenge. But now I see what started growing more than 11 years ago, with the thrill of leading other projects at the Centro Universitario de Plasencia, and today we have 4 active doctoral theses, as well as 3 already finished. We have a biobank of nails, and multiple patents in development. We cooperate with local companies, and we work on spreading both science and health. We have lots of ideas, but we lack of enough hands and sponsoring that believes a bit more on good projects rather than the usual ones.
I feel that I dreamed and achieved my dream… The best part is being able to aid more researchers in achieving theirs, and I’m happy that half of them or more are women like me, like many others that dreamed and developed a project that became reality.
