Saioa Gómez Zorita. Universidad del País Vasco
- WHO are you?
I am Saioa Gómez Zorita, a graduate in Pharmacy and Ph.D. in Nutrition and Health from the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU). Currently, I am a professor in the Department of Pharmacy and Food Sciences, where I combine my teaching with my research work. In addition, I am very interested in carrying out activities related to the communication of science since I consider that scientific culture is a great tool that should be at the service of society.
- WHAT do you research?
We mainly study the effect of foods and some of their components on obesity and some of its co-morbidities such as fatty liver and insulin resistance. Also, for the last few years, we have been including a gender perspective in our studies, which is of great interest in the field of personalized nutrition since the prevalence and evolution of many pathologies differ between men and women. We also direct our research towards the search for new prognostic biomarkers and response to treatments.
- WHERE do you research?
I carry out my research at the Research Group “Nutrition and Obesity,” a group of the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU), recognized as a group of the Basque University System by the Basque Government, which belongs to the Ciber Fisiopatología de la Obesidad y Nutrición (CIBERobn) of the Carlos III Health Institute and is also attached to the Bioaraba Health Research Institute.
- WHEN do you plan to do your work?
I perform my work as a researcher on a daily basis, or almost daily since research work includes not only on-site work at the university but also many other activities such as attending meetings and conferences.
WHY is your work important?
Research, in general, is essential for the advancement of society. Specifically, our work is important because nutrition and food are a basic aspect for the prevention and treatment of diseases of high prevalence. In the long run, this research can help improve people’s quality of life.
Also, teaching is essential for training future professionals, and the transfer of knowledge, one of the pillars of our university, contributes to a great enrichment of our society.
- Is your work related to any EU mission?
Yes, it is mainly related to the missions “Soil health and food” and “Cancer”.
