The European Researchers Night
- The institutions that form the âGrupo de Universidadesâ (G-9) are coming together in a consortium to celebrate together the European Night of Researchers 2020, coordinated by the University of Oviedo.
- The event will take place on November 27 at the Universities of Oviedo, Cantabria, Castilla-La Mancha, Extremadura, Islas Baleares, Public of Navarra, PaĂs Vasco, Zaragoza and with the collaboration of La Rioja.
- The activities, in a virtual format, aim to the bring research staff and their day-to-day life closer to society, and to inspire young people to pursue a scientific career.
The European Researchers Night is a scientific dissemination project promoted and funded by the European Commission, under the Marie SkĆodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) -program to promote scientific careers in Europe- framed within the Horizon 2020, Framework Program of Research and Innovation of the European Union, which will be held this Friday, November 27 with more than 300 free activities.
The âNightâ started in 2005 with 15 countries and 20 cities and a total of roughly 20,000 participants. Fifteen years later, in 2019, more than 1.5 million visitors attended in 29 countries and with more than 36,000 researchers actively participating in the event. This year, almost 400 cities will simultaneously join the celebration.
Due to the situation caused by the coronavirus pandemic, the event, initially in person, has been replaced by an extensive virtual program. Thus, the activities that will take place during the morning will be aimed at young audiences, and the ones taking place during the afternoon will target a more general public.
Common G-9 Activities
The participating universities have designed some joint activities such as âCiencia Nocturnaâ, a radio program about the European Researchers Night coordinated by the scientific journalist RomĂĄn Escudero from the University of Castilla La Mancha. The interviews, which will focus on statistics and operations research, condensed matter physics, prehistory, aging, animal genetics or the methodology of behavioral sciences, among other topics, will be broadcast at 9:30 p.m. through the YouTube channel of the consortium.
As a part of the activities, the University of Oviedo has written and programmed a role-playing game Choose your own scientific adventure, an interactive initiative that represents the role of a university student who finishes his degree and wants to work on research. Throughout this story, he will have to make decisions that will shape his resumĂ©, that is, his ethics and social skills. The same path can lead to different ends, you can win the Nobel Prize … but you can also end up in jail.
For sixth-grade primary school students from the nine Autonomous Communities, the University of Cantabria coordinates the activity âKahoot ÂżQuĂ© sabes sobre Europa?â that can be followed live through Microsoft TEAMS. This game puts its participants to the test, and ask them: What do you know about Europe?

To allow citizens to know more closely the people who are dedicated to research, so they can value their labor and the benefits that their work brings to society, research staff from the nine universities have joined in the blog âOne night I dreamed that I wanted to be … and today I am … âwhere you have the opportunity to learn about the professional and human profile of scientists who, in addition to research, dedicate part of their time to the dissemination of scientific knowledge.
Simultaneously to the joint activities, in all the Autonomous Communities of the Grupo de Universidades G-9, more than 300 activities including: workshops, fairs, monologues, speed dating with scientists, escape rooms, interviews, virtual visits to large scientific facilities and museums, cinema forums, urban exhibitions, spaces dedicated to European research, remote astronomical observations, and many more can be enjoyed during the ERN.
