One night, I dreamed of being a researcher, and today I’m…
#HumansofSTEAM
Hired Doctor Professor, a position that didn’t exist when I joined the University, so who’s to say where will I end up… I focus my research on representation of masculinities in filmed English texts, because I think the study of men and their representation help us tackle the issue of machismo. From our seat in the cinema or at home identifications and imitations are made, and they should provide us a reason for reflection and analysis.
In the preface of my doctoral thesis, I mention how Close Encounters of the Third Kind, by Steven Spielberg, impacted me: That night I slept with my parents. From there, I studied the representation of men in five of this director films: Duel, Jaws, Jurassic Park, The Lost World: Jurassic Park, y War of the Worlds. Apart from the academic conclusions, I realised I had questioned myself how did I behave as a son, father, husband, brother, and broadly, as a man in my reality.
I broaden that study, and central theme, to other works of Spielberg and other directors with a more social nature, such as Ken Loach, and more recently with Irish locations, in movies from John Michael McDonagh and John Carney.
I produced various short movies with students, and I think is time to direct a full-length film.
