The G9 Missions Consortium Celebrates World Oceans Day
In honor of World Oceans Day on June 8th, the consortium of universities within the European project G9Missions is gearing up for a series of activities aimed at promoting environmental and ocean-related research and science.
As a preliminary event under the umbrella of the G9Missions project for the European Researchers’ Night, the G-9 universities are orchestrating a variety of initiatives.
The G9 Missions consortium stands in support of World Oceans Day, with this year’s theme being “Oceanic Planet: Shifting Currents.” Their goal is to convey and disseminate the human impact on the oceans, emphasize the universities’ research in this field, and raise awareness among society about the imperative for sustainable ocean management.
The group of G-9 universities is jointly presenting “A Sea of Science,” a venture designed by the Universitat de les Illes Balears and the University of the Basque Country (Euskal Herriko Unibertsitatea). This project involves a contest aimed at primary and secondary students, challenging them to collaborate on literary and artistic works inspired by the protection and restoration of marine ecosystems.
Among the diverse activities organized by the consortium’s universities, one standout is the urban exhibition “The Ocean Crisis in Data“, curated by the University of Oviedo. This exhibit showcases panels displaying impactful phrases that underscore the significance of ocean conservation and the severity of marine pollution. Each statement is substantiated by concrete data and figures drawn from scientific articles, ensuring each declaration is grounded in scientific evidence.
This exhibition will be accessible through advertising mediums and streets in Oviedo until June 30th. Additionally, the infographics from the exhibition will be disseminated via the consortium universities’ social media platforms and on digital advertising boards across the University of Zaragoza campuses.
Another intriguing activity is the “Nocturnal Safari at Costa Quebrada“, an offering by the University of Cantabria that provides a group of students the chance to discover the behavior of nocturnally active marine species in their natural habitat. Similarly targeted at students, the Public University of Navarre has planned a series of enlightening workshops on June 8th under the banner of “Water Agents.” These workshops will involve secondary school students engaging in investigative and observational activities related to the sustainability of rivers and groundwater.
The theme of marine conservation and sustainability will be the focal point of a lecture to be delivered on June 8th at the Universitat de les Illes Balears, prior to the awards ceremony at the winning school or institute for the “A Sea of Science” competition. Likewise, the University of the Basque Country-Euskal Herriko Unibertsitatea is organizing a Knowledge Fair on June 8th, featuring the project “Attention! Don’t Crush Me!” by a group of researchers from the Plentzia Marine Station at the University of the Basque Country-Euskal Herriko Unibertsitatea. This initiative aims to bring the Basque coast closer to participants, focusing their attention on microscopic biodiversity and the agents that threaten it.
In an audiovisual format, the University of Zaragoza will screen the docufiction “The Sea’s Forgotten,” starring Carmelo Gómez, which resurrects the figure of the oceanographer Odón de Buen, born in Zuera (Zaragoza), and considered Spain’s first oceanographer. The event is set to take place on Wednesday, June 7th, at the Paraninfo.
Following this format, and honing in on the impact of global change on soil and water biodiversity, the University of Extremadura has produced the audiovisual report “SOS Climate Emergency” for social media. In this video, UEx researchers highlight the challenges in protecting soil health and managing water amidst global change. Furthermore, the University of Castilla-La Mancha will broadcast a radio program on Radio Castilla-La Mancha dedicated to wetlands, featuring an expert from UCLM.
G9 Missions
Under the banner of ‘G9 Missions. Go for the Missions!’, the institutions within the Group of 9 Universities, coordinated by the University of Cantabria, are coming together for the third consecutive year to celebrate the European Researchers’ Night in 2022 and 2023. As an innovation, the consortium is also introducing preliminary events and the Circular Science outreach program.
The consortium’s activities, composed of the universities of Cantabria, Castilla-La Mancha, Extremadura, Balearic Islands, Oviedo, Basque Country, Public University of Navarre, and Zaragoza, in collaboration with the University of La Rioja, are available on the website: https://nocheinvestigag9.es/
This project is funded by the European Union under the Horizon Europe program: Framework Programme for Research and Innovation, under grant agreement number 101061455.
